Op Shop Ball

The Anglicare WA Op Shop Ball, presented by APM, is a sell-out gala event playing host to over 700 guests. The ball attracts high net-worth individuals, WA philanthropists and a variety of corporate organisations. From the inaugural ball in 2007, to a short hiatus due to COVID, the Ball has been revived for 2023.

By purchasing a table, your generosity allows Anglicare WA to fund the Young Hearts service, which empowers children to overcome their trauma, while developing the skills to build healthy relationships and thrive in the future.

What to wear? The theme for 2023 is ‘Going to the Chapel’. You can be glamorous, vintage, or clever. From Vegas wedding threads to traditional frocks, all styles are welcome - the most important thing is to have fun! No need to hire a tux or fork out on a frock – it is all about dressing to impress in your finest Op Shop find. You are welcome to visit any one of our fabulous stores, or even go online to choose your outfit while supporting sustainable fashion.

What happens in our chapel, stays in our chapel, so join us as we take over the Crown Ballroom on May 6th 2023.

Your Support - Young Hearts

The Issue: While most violent crimes have been slowly decreasing in Australia over the past ten years, rates of family and domestic violence (FDV) have continued to rise. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, WA has the highest recorded rates of FDV in the country.

In every 1 in 3 family and domestic violence instances in WA, children have been exposed to the violence.

Children are often the invisible victims of this crime. Rather than growing up in a safe and nurturing environment, they live in a home that is unpredictable and dominated by fear. According to the Institute of Family Studies, this early exposure to abuse has short- and long-term impacts on children’s health and wellbeing, including increased rates of anxiety and depression, difficulties with learning, behavioural issues, a higher likelihood of future alcohol and drug misuse, and greater risk of homelessness.

The Solution: Young Hearts is a completely free counselling service, giving vulnerable children a safe space to explore their experiences of family and domestic violence. Through art, dance, play and talk therapy, Young Hearts empowers children to overcome their trauma, while developing the skills to build healthy relationships and thrive in the future.

Young Hearts is a critical response service that directly supports children and young people who have experienced family and domestic violence. Through counselling, outreach and camps, Young Hearts instils feelings of safety and connection in these affected children, improving their immediate health and wellbeing, as well as providing opportunities for healthy relationships in the future. With appropriate and timely support, children can recover from the trauma they have suffered.

The usual avenues for this support, however, are often expensive and inaccessible, with waitlists of up to a year for children to receive psychological treatment. Young Hearts seeks to fill this gap by operating in regions with the most urgent need, whether these are metropolitan or regional. Although our waitlists have increased to 12 weeks in most locations, this is still well below the national average, and we are working on expanding the service to meet this growing need.

In 2023, The Op Shop Ball will again be raising vital funds to ensure that Young Hearts can not only continue, but that it can expand. We promise to go where it is hard and where it is needed to ensure that young people get the crucial support that they need.
