WHAT IS THE BHS LIBRARY REVITALISTION PROJECT?

Bomaderry High School is the only public High School in the greater Bomaderry area, providing quality education for students from areas such as Bomaderry, North Nowra, Shoalhaven Heads, Berry, Kangaroo Valley and Cambewarra.

The current Bomaderry High School library is over 30 years old and was built when the function of libraries was very different to modern day libraries. Because of this, BHS is very limited in its use of the library and would like to transform it into a vibrant, engaging space that is utilised by Bomaderry High School students, staff and the wider community.

The aim is to add five new learning spaces, to better meet the needs of people with additional needs, to give greater access to community groups and to provide a learning environment that is conducive to learning all year round.

Once redeveloped the BHS Library will become a Community Collaboration Hub which will provide a unique, flexible, modern space for community use and enhance community connectedness between the school and the broader community. In a digital society these spaces will provide an alternative where community or school members can collaborate, reflect, discuss, share and learn in modern, comfortable surroundings. The library as a collaboration hub would also provide an alternative to commercial venues sought after by community groups. Universal design principals will mean diverse needs are met in a variety of indoor and outdoor flexible learning spaces not available elsewhere.

Among others, it will provide flexible, accessible, climate-controlled and/or low stimulus spaces to meet varied, and unmet, needs of people with disabilities, those experiencing trauma and other conditions. The refurbishment will create a stronger sense of community, and provide a place of rich engagement, learning and community celebration (Rogers, 2017).

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $172,000. We aim to reach this ambitious target through fundraising, donations, in-kind work (donated labour), applying for State and Federal grants and with a contribution from BHS/DoE. We have already started our fundraising efforts with the recent Car Boot sale and partnerships with local drinks outlets to take advantage of Return and Earn container refunds. However, we still have a long way to go and any support for our project would be very gratefully received.

Thank you for supporting the BHS P&C and our wonderful school staff and students
