JOY: Opera in the Gardens - a fundraising event - Has Ended
DO Details
JOY is an exclusive opera performance held in the stunning grounds of ‘Shirley’, a property on the Monaro near Nimmitabel. Be charmed, delighted and entertained by the glorious voice of renowned opera singer Tobias Cole, artistic director of Canberra opera company Handel in the Theatre. Tobias is one of Australia’s most successful countertenors, having performed throughout Australia, the UK and USA.
The concert is a fundraising event for South East Arts’ Swell: Arts and Health program. Arts and Health is the practice of using arts to improve health and wellbeing, as well as enhancing health care experiences for patients and their support networks. Swell aims to build stronger, healthier and happier communities, supported by strong networks and opportunities for participation and learning.
Swell has already brought live music and art to the South East Regional Hospital in Bega, Aboriginal cultural integration and welcome to health services in the Eurobodalla and networked arts and health workers across the region. Our next project will use theatre to deliver key health messages across Bega Valley, Eurobodalla and Snowy Monaro Regional Shire Council areas. On the horizon, are projects focussing on youth mental health and creative ageing. Purchasing a ticket to this fundraising event will help us to deliver even more.
Thanks to the generosity of Tobias Cole and our hosts John and Sally-Ann Cottle, profits from the ticket sales will go to support the work of South East Arts in the area of arts and health.
The gardens of ‘Shirley’ are the jewel of this Monaro sheep and cattle property's crown. Originally designed by Claude Crowe, three generations ago, the current owners commissioned Paul Bangay to bring their vision to life. The French and Italian inspired gardens and expansive lawns will create a unique venue for this performance, with a beautiful Autumn backdrop.
'Shirley' is a regular stop in the famed Private Gardens of the Monaro open gardens tours and was featured in the 70th Anniversary Collector's Edition of House & Garden Magazine currently on sale.
You are welcome to wander the 2.4ha of gardens at your leisure before the performance (2.30pm) and during the intermission.
'Shirley' is located just 1 hour from Bega or 45 minutes from Cooma and just 2 hours from Canberra.
The performance is outside on the lawns in the open. Please bring a picnic rug or low chair to sit on for the performance. Afternoon tea will be available for purchase but you are welcome to bring a picnic.
This event is not suitable for children. No pets please as this is a working farm.
