Grand Organ from the Grave with Thomas Heywood
Concert organ sensation Thomas Heywood pays tribute to Melbourne's first City Organist David Lee in a historical fundraising concert event.
David Lee was born in 1837 in Armagh, Ireland. He came to Melbourne in 1864 and was appointed Melbourne's first City Organist in 1877. His twice-weekly recitals at the Melbourne Town Hall were very popular for many years. Known as a charismatic musician and businessman, David Lee died in 1897 and was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery.
Recently, Thomas Heywood sought out the grave of one of the city's key historical musical figures, and found it in a state of disrepair. A portion of funds from ticket sales for this concert will be used to provide a suitable acknowledgement of David Lee's historical standing.
Repertoire will be drawn from works that David Lee played during his time at Melbourne Town Hall.
Cost: $35/$28. Generous family group tickets. Tickets also available at the door from 12.30pm (if available).
