ABOUT THE CAUSE:
Pollinate Energy is a social business with a mission to improve the lives of India’s urban energy poor by giving them access to life-changing and affordable products. India's energy poor refer to the 306 million people without electricity access - 25% of the Indian population. Many of these people live in urban slums and are reliant on kerosene lanterns for indoor lighting, whose fumes pose a severe health risk. Since being founded in 2012, Pollinate Energy has worked to distribute solar lanterns to improve the livelihoods of the urban poor by reducing indoor smoke, fuel usage and expenditure and in general improve light quality.
What makes Pollinate Energy stand out is its strong sustainability model. Rather than just giving handouts, Pollinate provides local entrepreneurial community members with the training to start their own business and thereby sell solar lanterns on affordable payment plans to slum dwellers. In this way the entrepreneurs become self-sufficient, and lantern owners become familiar with and committed to the product. Furthermore a small percentage of the profits return to Pollinate, funding the expansion of the business into new communities.
To date nearly 6,000 energy systems have been sold, reaching nearly 30,000 people. This February I will be travelling to India, working with Pollinate Energy and local entrepreneurs to facilitate the start-up of the enterprise in its second city, Hyderabad. Having studied Renewable Energy Engineering and Development Studies at university, and researching energy poverty for my honours thesis I am very excited to contribute to Pollinate Energy’s work!
My fundraising target is $2400. The profit raised from this movie night will help Pollinate Energy with its expansion to Hyderabad, support the training of its entrepreneurs and ultimately provide safe, higher quality lighting for the urban poor. You will also be supporting Pollinates goal to reach 50 Indian cities by 2020 and also to develop new affordable products such as water filters and clean cook stoves.
You can read more about Pollinate energy here or even watch one of awesome these videos. This UN Momentum for Change documentary features Pollinate and is featured on the UNFCCC website.
Thank you for your support. Please feel free to ask me any questions at Isabel.baudish@gmail.com. I look forward to sharing my experiences in India with you next year.
