What is the Variety Old Bags Lunch?

The Variety Old Bags Lunch is a phenomenon fast sweeping the state! A ladies lunch with a twist of fashion has been to many regional towns over the last five years and it’s on its way to the Gold Coast for the very first time.

It’s aimed at ladies who love to lunch, the event combines fun and philanthropy, as the lovely lunchettes bring along their old handbags which will be donated to a local charity.  Guests will then have the opportunity to add a new bag to their collection before the day is over, with some of the handbags containing extra special treats in them.

About Variety – the Children’s Charity of Queensland

Variety Queensland is dedicated to empowering the lives of children who are sick, disadvantaged and who have special needs to live, laugh and learn. Last year we were able to have a positive effect on the lives of over 55,000 children in need. With the assistance of our generous supporters, we provided equipment and services to families across Queensland to the value of over $2.8 million.

Where will the proceeds from this event go?

The Gold Coast Variety Old Bags Lunch will help raise much needed funds for the Anthea Mari Family Appeal which will provide financial assistance to a Gold Coast family who have recently endured very difficult circumstances. Here is an excerpt written by Anthea's family, describing the situation and how we can make a difference:

Anthea Mari, was a 34 year old mother to 4 children but in the early hours of 26 August 2014, her life came to a tragic end when she was murdered in her home in Norman Park, Brisbane.  Anthea, who was an advocate for women and children subjected to domestic violence, was that night robbed of her life, her hopes, her dreams and more importantly, being a mother to her children.

The lives of Anthea’s children’s have been forever changed, in particular the 2 daughters who lived with Anthea, who now not only have to deal with the loss of their mother under such circumstances, but they also have to face the challenges which comes with starting a new life. New schools, friends, sporting clubs and a new way of life are just a few of the changes which the children need to learn to adjust.

Anthea’s extended family and friends, including Anthea’s brother and his family, have all rallied around them to provide as much support and assistance as possible.

It is hoped that the Anthea Mari Family Appeal will raise sufficient funds to assist the family in caring and providing an adequate life for the 2 girls.  The funds will solely be dedicated to their care and ongoing expenses such as school fees, clothing, sports, medical expenses etc., through a trust fund in the name of the appeal.

Please support this iconic event so we can assist this local family in need.
