MITHRA is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘friendship’. Mithra Rehabilitation Centre in Chennai, India, is a place of friendship and has been for 100s of Australian School students and the Mithra community since an Australian, Sr. Mary Theodore, started it in 1977. Sister or ‘Mother’ Theodore welcomed everyone especially the poorest of the poor and created one of India’s first dedicated places for people with a disability. MITHRA became a place of great hope and connection and many Australian youth have visited and formed long lasting bonds with this community and India, via the open embrace and smiles of the Mithra community. India has changed now and Mother Theodore has passed away but the connection with this community and Adelaide is as strong and vital as ever, as the needs of those in the poorest communities who are facing mental and physical challenges such as cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome and multiple disabilities are far from met. But at Mithra services such as schooling, physiotherapy, accommodation, food, medical care, are made available to all without any discrimination of religion, caste, creed, gender and financial or social status.
