A whale festival will be held on the Gold Coast for the first time on Saturday 31 August 2019 at Burleigh Beach. Organised by Humpbacks and Highrises (HHR), a local NGO, the festival hopes to increase awareness in the local community about the need to care for our oceans and the migrating whales that visit the east coast of Australia every year.

HHR spokesman, Olaf  Meynecke, said,” We have been collecting data on humpback whales and other marine mammals since 2011 - in fact, it is Queensland’s largest marine mammal monitoring program. Now, we want to share some of our excitement about these amazing creatures.”

The Whale Festival is an opportunity for the public to learn more about how their actions can impact the welfare of the world’s largest marine mammals. There will be stalls and exhibits from various organisations which are also spearheading many environmental actions such as Gecko and Dolphin Research, and activities to give everyone a chance to be the change they want to see: a beach scavenger hunt cleanup with exciting prizes, a whale watch from the headland, and storytelling for our youngest to learn more about whales. Other exhibitors will showcase products that will lessen our impact on the environment and assist in our becoming waste-free.

Live music from local talented artists including BLIGH and The Lost Knights, with the festival ending with a screening of “Humpback Whales” narrated by Ewan McGregor.

Register for a free ticket for a chance to win an Eco bag filled with information and eco friendly products at the Whale festival.

DO Supports

Humpbacks & High-Rises. Our mission is to ensure present and future generations of the community have access to enjoy, appreciate and care for Humpback whales and all marine creatures. We aim to sustain whale watching at the Gold Coast for future generations by improving the understanding about Humpback whales through the collection of data on physical water properties, investigate humpback whale abundance, distribution, behaviour and movement patterns and to establish community involvement in the Gold Coast “bay” area and beyond. We collect, analyse and publish information on Humpback whales for the public with the support of our community members. We provide adaptation strategies for whales in urbanised waters and bring the community closer to the whales.
