Dribble the Lake:

Introduction / Nigel Story

Victorian Basketball, Dementia Australia, Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and Chase Basketball are joining forces to hold an exciting event on September 27, 2019. The event is named “Dribble the Lake”.

Using the world class facility that is Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and with the support of the worlds best sport Basketball, our collective aim is start a program that is of high value for those who attend the event, the carers and the support network of people directly affected by those suffering from Dementia and Dementia related illnesses.

”for Faye”…….my personal story.

As a very proud Melbournian and a honoured and active member of the Victorian Basketball Community, Nigel Purchase is the founder of “Dribble the Lake”. Nigel has his own personal connection to Dementia with Nigel’s Mother in Law Faye suffering with advanced Alzheimer’s.

Nigel has seen and experienced the trauma that surrounds this illness. Seeing the grief and stress that Faye’s husband Brian and the immediate family has been something that proves that such a disease causes major issues beyond the sufferer. “Dribble the Lake” is Basketball’s way of supporting the Dementia Community and helps address some of the challenges.

Our aim through funds raised from Dribble the Lake is to implement programs and social initiatives that make those close to this illness aware that there is help. Creating environments and events that enable meaningful conversations, compassionate connections and empathetic environments to help the carers understand that……. THEY ARE NOT ALONE.

The Event

With the support off the basketball community of Victoria, Open Chambers ( The peak chamber for SME and creating preferrable futures for Small Business )  the Dribble the Lake event has started. How to get involved is simple, exciting and rewarding.

  1. Clubs, Teams and Individuals log onto the Dribble the Lake web site and register their name, team or club. There is a minimum obligation to receive your t-shirt and basketball on the day of the event.
  2. Individuals, teams and clubs will be rewarded for the most funds raised.
  3. Individuals, teams and clubs on the day show up on the day to start their walk. Prior to commencing the walk, they register, receive their ball and shirt.
  4. Dribbling Teams depart every 15 minutes. The Dribbling Teams depart MSAC to follow the Dribble the Lake course.
  5. Dribbling Teams will have basketball stars, celebrities and members from your personal group, a association or fund raising team. Dribbling Teams congregate in the Show Court area and depart together and return to the Main basketball court area together.
  6. Once back from the Dribble The Lake course, Dribbling teams finish in the main basketball court area at MSAC where some courts will be reserved for general mingling, some courts for interaction with stars, some courts with skills programs, some with community basketball programs and some for viewing by the public.
  7. People then depart MSAC to go home with their basketball, their shirt and memories of a great day for a great cause.
