Join us during National Reconciliation Week for a night of Indigenous cultural immersion, to celebrate and fundraise for Ganbina and the Collingwood Football Club Foundation, as we launch our Community Program Partnership.

Ganbina and Collingwood Football Club Foundation have formed a partnership to deliver a suite of programs designed to create a sustainable future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This initiative is built upon a sharing of our values and visions as we stand ‘side by side’ in our quest to work with the La Trobe Valley Indigenous community to engage, develop, and deliver the JOBS4U2 program into the community.

We are at the beginning of this journey, and to support the resources required to achieve our goals we need to raise awareness of our intent, and also raise much needed financial support.

Our Fund Raising Target is $ 380,000, and it kicks off with this event. This will enable us to commence and deliver the program suite for 12 months.

ON THE NIGHT

You will hear from Collingwood’s President Eddie McGuire and Ganbina CEO Anthony Cavanagh why this partnership has been forged, its purpose for change, and commitment to empower Indigenous people to achieve true social and economic equality with all Australians.

You will enjoy live entertainment from one of Australia’s most successful Indigenous artists and winner of The X Factor in 2016 – Isaiah Firebrace and his band.

The event will be MC’d by Jodie Sizer, CEO of PwC Indigenous Consulting, Chairperson of Collingwood’s Reconciliation Working Group and newly appointed Collingwood Board member.

DO Supports

Ganbina Ganbina is a registered charity that operates Australia’s most successful Indigenous school to work transition program called JOBS4U2. Our offices are located in Shepparton and Melbourne, and we employ ten staff, with our Chief Executive Officer reporting to the Board of Directors. Ganbina operates independently and is free from any political, religious or other affiliations, and relies entirely on support received from philanthropic trusts, corporate partners and individual donors to carry out its work. Ganbina’s vision is to empower Indigenous people to achieve true social and economic equality with all Australians within a time frame of two generations. Our mission is to equip young Indigenous people with the education, training and life skills they need to fulfil their full potential. In this way, they become ‘agents of change’, inspiring and leading their communities to carve out a brighter future for themselves, their children and their children’s children. To achieve this, we work with young people throughout their primary and secondary school years to make sure that they get the right education, jobs training and life skills they need in their formative years to enable them to reach their full potential as adults. By successfully completing their secondary education and going on to tertiary training, meaningful employment and ultimately financial independence, we know that these young people are an inspiration to others in their communities to do likewise.  In effect, they act as 'agents of change', ultimately helping to break the cycle of long-term generational unemployment and welfare dependency among Indigenous people. It's a genuine 'Hand Up' rather than 'Hand Out' approach. It is represented graphically by our logo of two hands reaching out to help one another, circled by the rising sun which symbolises the dawning of new opportunities in life. Over 60 per cent of all Indigenous 17-24 years olds in Australia are not fully engaged in work or study after leaving school. Many of them are capable of achieving so much more than this. But continuing high levels of unemployment and generational welfare dependency among Indigenous communities mean that our children often lack the support and role models they need to show them how to live independent, fulfilling lives. Without that guidance, our youth struggle to achieve the wonderful life and career opportunities which are open to all Australians.  As a result, many of them are travelling down roads that lead nowhere. For many years, Ganbina has been working with young Indigenous people to realise their own educational and career dreams of a better future, free from dependency on welfare, health and financial services. Looking ahead, we are focused on accelerating our program expansion strategy by showcasing and sharing our programs to help bring about positive change in other Indigenous communities across Australia. Our partnership with The Collingwood Football Clubs Barrawan Program, will enable us to engage with, and deliver the program in the La Trobe Valley region.   Collingwood Football Club's Barrawarn Program The Barrawarn Program is the Collingwood Football Club’s key Indigenous community program. Collingwood is committed to supporting Indigenous Australian in our community and has been operating a range of programs and initiatives over the past 15 years. The initial aim of the program was to empower young Indigenous Australians through employment and educational opportunities and to tackle disadvantage through increased economic participation and development. Our Reconciliation Action Plan formalises the club’s commitment to support, recognise and provide opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. All Collingwood staff and players participate in Cultural Awareness Training and leading player Travis Varcoe is an ambassador for the Barrawarn Program. The program has been delivered in two streams – the Barrawarn Direct Employment Program and the Barrawarn Trainee Program – and each has been operating with tremendous success for the past 3 years. In that time the program has secured 46 full-time work placements with a range of host employers. The Collingwood Football Club Foundation has also supported 15 traineeships with AFL Sportsready and four full-time traineeships with AFL Victoria from 2015-17. Each year Collingwood promotes The Barrawarn Program through the AFL Indigenous Round and holds a Guernsey design competition to raise funds for Indigenous programs and partnerships. In 2017, Collingwood and its’ premier partner CGU are working together to expand the program and a range of initiatives including a new partnership with Dardi Munwurro. The Collingwood Football Club Foundation also provides support to the Fitzroy Stars Football Club; the Ganbina Program, Barkly Region in Northern Territory for Next Generation Academy and Community Camps.
