DO Supports

Our Mission   Harrison’s Little Wings Inc. is a not for profit organisation who provide Peer Support and practical support to families who have been diagnosed with a extreme high risk pregnancy. We support those families who have the uncertainty of not knowing whether their baby will survive pregnancy.   We also provide Precious Pregnancy Packs to families who have been diagnosed with a extreme high risk pregnancy. These packs contain valuable resources to families to help them make important decisions.   We believe every family is unique and have different needs and we try and support that family where needed. Harrison’s Little Wings believes in supporting the family with practical services, resources and peer support. The uncertainty that our families face can cause a family to feel isolated, powerless, anger, and depression. Harrison’s Little Wings helps families realise they aren’t alone, and provide a wrap around service to these Precious families.     Harrison’s Little Wings has been created to offer a safe, supportive and informative space for extreme high risk pregnant mothers and their families. We have several support options in place, as we know that each family is unique. We encourage each mother to choose the support they feel that they and their family would benefit from most. Families are welcome to receive any or all, of our available support options.   Practical Support Program   Designed to support our families on a practical, general needs basis.  This service is usually provided for mothers that may be on extended bed rest or admitted to hospital due to medical necessity, mothers that are advised to ‘take it easy’ at home by their care provider, but may have other young children to care for, or even those that are struggling when they are due to give birth under stressful circumstances. We can assist with the costs of practical services such as house cleaning, yard maintenance, transport and/or parking fees and (if local to the greater Brisbane and Gold Coast areas) individual counselling sessions. We currently provide support to families QLD wide and endeavour to extend our support nationally in the future when funding permits.   Precious Pregnancy Packs   A valuable resource for newly diagnosed families. It can be hard to process difficult news at medical appointments. Our packs are an information resource so mothers and their families have something tangible to read when they are at home in their safe space. It is not diagnosis specific and is an over view of potential options. These were created jointly by mothers that previously have experienced a high risk pregnancy, and have been guided by what they wanted or needed to know when they were in a similar situation. It can also assist with knowing ‘what to ask’ of medical care providers. We also provide a notepad, pen, tissues, and an adult colouring book. We recently added Orange Essential oil. When used at baby’s birth it may help to create a powerful memory connection for parents.     Peer Support Program This program has been very recently introduced.  Sessions have 2 co-facilitators.  Melanie McKenzie, as founder and director of Harrison's Little Wings with her own lived experience to draw on, and Karen Jefferson our qualified counsellor. It is important to Harrison's Little Wings that we provide a comforting space so families can have the opportunity to meet others that are also experiencing an extreme high risk pregnancy and understand the challenges. We have two location options for our sessions. It was important for us to create the right space for women to either come alone, or with other children.  Tuesdays lunch sessions are located at The Family Place, in Logan Central. It’s an amazing space where children can play in a secure space and mums can relax on the couch, have a coffee or tea and share lunch. We also provide a separate space for women that do not have children attending.  This session is every second Thursday evening at changing locations
