DO Details

In some of the world’s poorest communities, it’s normal for women and children to walk for hours just to collect water. In fact, 263 million people worldwide spend over 30 minutes per round trip to collect water from a safe source. This is a problem that primarily affects women and girls, who are responsible for water collection in eight out of ten households that don’t have access to water on their premises.

To mark World Water Day on 22 March, WaterAid is inviting Australians to walk in solidarity with those who need to walk long distances to collect water. Challenge yourself to walk 10,000 steps a day with your colleagues, classmates or friends to raise money for people who walk too much.

Sign up your workplace, your school, or your friends and walk together from 19 - 23 March.

DO Supports

WaterAid Australia was founded in 2004 in collaboration between the water industry and the international aid sector, and officially launched at Parliament House by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Alexander Downer, in 2005. For the past 14 years, WaterAid Australia has been working with local community partners, governments and other institutions to set up practical and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene projects in some of the poorest and most marginalised communities worldwide. WaterAid Australia believe in working towards a world where everyone, everywhere has access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.
