MEET THE PROVOCATEURS

EWA WOJKOWSKA

Ewa Wojkowska is co-founder of an Indonesian non-profit best known for innovative technologies Kopernik, an Indonesian non-profit best known for innovative technologies, which experiments with potential solutions to find what works in reducing poverty faced by people living in the last mile. She’s one of the prestigious ‘Asia Society Young Leaders". Kopernik was born from Ewa's desire to more effectively address development issues, and connects far-flung farming communities to technology solutions such as water filters, solar lighting, and agricultural innovations that can improve their standard of living. Prior to co-founding Kopernik, she worked for the United Nations and the World Bank in Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Sierra Leone, Thailand and New York, focusing on the empowerment of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. She has extensive experience in human rights and justice, and founded the United Nations Development Programme access to justice program in Indonesia. Ewa also founded Centro Feto, a women's empowerment organisation in Oecusse, Timor-Leste. Ewa has also been recognised as an Ashoka Fellow, Rutgers University's Social Entrepreneur of the Year, and as one of Advance's 50 emerging women leaders.

GEDE ROBI

Gede Robi, also known as Robi Navicula, is a musician, activist, writer, farmer, and educator – and one of the prestigious ‘Asia Society Young Leaders’ class of 2016, a network of young leaders focused on shaping a brighter future for the Asia-Pacific region. Robi is the vocalist, guitarist, the founder, and the frontman of the rock band Navicula, combining activism and music as tools for social change. Formed in 1996 in Bali, they have released 8 full-length studio albums and often collaborate with organization such as Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, Indonesia Corruption Watch, KPK (Commission for Corruption Eradication), Walhi, GIN Conference, and SPI (Indonesia Farmer Association). Robi is also the director and founder of Akarumput, a social entrepreneurship initiative based in Bali. He is a certified Permaculture designer who teaches organic farming in Indonesia, and around Southeast Asia. Robi also co-hosts an edutainment TV travel series titled ‘Viva Barista’, which explores coffee history, production and culture in Indonesia, from bean to cup.

KUTCHA EDWARDS (MUTTI-MUTTI)

Kutcha Edwards uses music to create connections across cultures, generations, and spaces. With an innate ability to communicate, he uses his talents to nurture understanding and self-knowledge amongst all those with whom he has contact. Kutcha regards himself as a song man, not simply a songwriter. He draws on a profound sense of all those who have gone before him on this land, along with his own life experiences, to help his audiences understand their own experiences, reconnect with their culture and promote cultural understanding. He draws strength from his family, country and his inheritance of a culture that stretches back over thousands of years. Winner of the 2016 Melbourne Prize for Music for outstanding contribution to Australian music and has enriched cultural and public life.

COUNCILLOR DARREN MCCUBBIN

Joins the provocateurs as purveyor of politics and according to the Australian (… * porn) for his role programming the Water Water festival in Sale for a show that encouraged men to consider their masculinity. Darren is actively lobbied in his role as a Councillor, lobbies on behalf of the Gippsland community to transition to a sustainable environment and economy. He has directed the Mallacoota Festival and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Chaired the Festivals Australia panel and been the Mayor of Wellington Shire in 2008, 2009 and 2012. Darren is a prolific writer, performer and theatre director and well positioned to explore how creativity and community are part of initiating and sustaining change.

FIONA YORK

Fiona moved to remote East Gippsland in the early 90s where she became involved in forest campaigning with the Goongerah Environment Centre.  Over the next twenty years while raising two children she lived and worked in the East Gippsland community working on environment, community and arts projects. Fiona has seen GECO move from blockades to Citizen Science. Along the way she has played a crucial role in mainstreaming community care for the environment through her role as activist, documenter, facilitator, treasurer - and muse - to (f)route, and all its 'F' iterations, across East Gippsland.

This event is made possible by the support of the Federal Government through the Australia Council and the Australian Indonesia Institute, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Herb Feith Foundation.

Project partners include Wurinbeena, F.INC ((F)ROUTE and FLOAT), Artistic Merit, the University of Melbourne, Multicultural Arts Victoria, Navicula and Kopernik.
