THIS EVENT IS OUR FULL DAY TRAINING PROGRAM

StartOut role models are trained mentors who are available online to young people of diverse sexuality and gender (DSG) who are struggling and need someone to talk to.

If you’re a compassionate person with access to a mobile device and an internet connection, you could be the role model a young Australian is looking for. You’ll help them to understand that what they’re experiencing is normal and that someone really does care.

Life doesn’t have to feel lonely.

Growing up as a DSG person can be very lonely. StartOut are trying to reach young DSG people right around
Australia who feel isolated.

We know that having strong role models and a sense of community can help to reduce depression, anxiety and
ultimately suicide. You can make a huge difference by sharing your story and being a reassuring presence in someone's life.

When you volunteer as a potential role model, StartOut will train you in how to be a great mentor to a young person, give you access to our unique online platform and support you along the way.

Just a little bit of your time could go a really long way.

Don't forget to formally apply to be a mentor as well (http://startout.org.au/apply)

DO Supports

People of diverse sexualities and genders (DSG) are over represented when it comes to mental health issues like depression and anxiety.  We want to change this. Growing up DSG isn’t easy and while there is a lot of support around depression and anxiety in our community, much of it comes too late.   StartOut Australia will focus on early interventions that build the confidence and resilience of DSG people with the aim of reducing the entirely preventable burden of poor mental health.  StartOut Australia exists to: Eradicate discrimination of young DSG people. Improve social inclusion and economic participation of young DSG people. Educate the wider community on the effects that discrimination and exclusion can have on the mental health of young DSG people.
