Join the party to help Dr Lanziz Homar raise funds for ADFA (Australian Doctors for Africa) to provide much needed medical equipment and training to hospitals in Madagascar.

Tickets include live music, drinks and substantial canapés. St Vincent's Hospital Toowoomba very kindly donated 4 laparoscopy stacks to ADFA last year for the development of gynaecology and general surgery services in Tulear and Antananarivo, cities in Madagascar.

Last year we raised $11,000 towards shipping the equipment and providing training to the local health staff. More money is needed for consumable materials required to use the laparoscopy stacks, to provide further training to maximise the benefits of the equpiment, and to ship other donated medical equipment for the obstetrics, paediatric and general surgery services. Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimally invasive or keyhole surgery, has dramatically improved the outcomes of surgeries in every specialty. Benefits include: smaller incisions which reduce the risk of infection, less blood loss during surgery, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to normal activity. The majority of the population of Madagascar is very disadvantaged, and a reduction in their length of stay in hospital and a more rapid recovery will make healthcare much more affordable and prevent a further spiral into poverty through time off work. Dr Homar travelled to Madagascar in April this year with another gynaecologist (from Canberra- Dr Menakaya) and 2 nurses from St Vincents Hospital, Graham Rennie and Lisa Schwartz. Together they installed the equipment at three separate hospitals and trained the local staff including doctors, nurses, and sterilisation staff, and performed the first laparoscopic hysterectomy in the country. Another trip is planned in November to continue the education and training, and to ensure that the equipment remains in good condition and can be used regularly to benefit patients. We are exploring innovations to reduce the ongoing cost of single-use consumable materials.  For further information about Australian Doctors for Africa and the laparoscopy project, visit: https://ausdocafrica.org https://rushfaster.com.au/blog/australian-doctors-for-africa/
