This annual thoroughbred race day, turning ten this year, has a wonderful history as a successful grass roots community fundraising event, run entirely by volunteers, and is the largest charity race day held in Tasmania, having run in both Hobart and Launceston, with the cup race itself having been run across race tracks in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.
In Australia, 48 women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer, and 140 men a year. There are over 65000 people living with breast cancer in Australia today, with 8 women dying each day. The aspirational goal of the National Breast Cancer Foundation is to see this figure reduced to ZERO deaths from breast cancer by 2030. This can only be achieved through research, which costs money.
In the years since inception, this Tasmanian race day has raised over $234,000 net profit for the charity, which has enormous benefit to the research that the National Breast Cancer Foundation funds. Funds raised locally at this race day have assisted fund the Endowed Chairs program, ensuring two leading lights working on research into breast cancer can continue their vital ground breaking work, feeding into the global knowledge about breast cancer.
As well as raising much needed funds for a valued cause, the Pink Cup is also a fun and affordable event and brings together guests from within the state as well as from intrastate.
Tickets are $75 with 20% of the ticket cost being donated to the charity, as well as there being live and silent auctions to fundraise on the day, and prizes for best dressed guests.
