We're excited to present a Sciencentre event for children with autism and sensory processing difficulties.
Sciensensory Day will be full of quiet and engaging activities for all ages. We have pattern making tables and a human body puzzle. Build a huge arch out of soft, foam blocks by following the number sequence on the 3D puzzle pieces. Test your reflexes. Explore how colours soak up heat. Have fun with bendy mirrors. Watch a swirling vortex form. Make a robot mimic your facial expressions or watch electrical charges move inside our big plasma ball.
For this very special afternoon we will turn the sound down and create an engaging and fun space that children with sensory processing difficulties can share with their families and carers. Entry will be strictly limited to ensure that the Sciencentre is not crowded. We will also have a peaceful Chill Out Zone set up as a dedicated quiet space and child-sized earmuffs from EMs 4 Kids available for use during your visit.
Date: Wednesday, 4th June 2014 Time: 2:30pm - 5pm Where: Sciencentre, Level 1 Cost: $10 per person (applies to both adults and children). Children under 3 are free.
Tickets are available from the Queensland Museum Shop (Level 2) in person and online. Please note that these special event tickets must be purchased from the Queensland Museum Shop; regular Sciencentre tickets are not valid for this event.
Ticket sales will be strictly limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
What to expect
The Sciencentre will be closed to the public at 2pm on Wednesday 4th June. We will make some modifications to our displays and then reopen at 2:30pm for special event ticket holders. Come along and enjoy all the fun of the Sciencentre, without the crowds and noisy exhibits.
While we will do our best to minimise the noise levels of the exhibits in the Sciencentre, not all of the exhibits that will be operational on the day are completely silent. We are also hosting a travelling exhibition called Science Fiction, Science Future that is in a separate room to the permanent Sciencentre displays. Many of the sound effects in this exhibition will remain functioning during your visit. You are very welcome to enjoy the activities in this space at your discretion.
If you would like specific information about the Sciencentre to help you plan your visit, please contact us on 3840 7555 or email us at email@example.com and we will be very happy to answer your questions.
