The pop-up charity exhibition of SAFE2014 opening will be held on Friday, June 27 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The exhibition will run from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29 in the Upstairs Gallery at View Point Handmade Gallery located at 13 View Point in Bendigo.
Earlier this mont...h, Santa Barbara, California witnessed multiple attacks on men and women near a college campus. The shooter in the attacks had posted a video prior to the incident as to the reason motivating him to attack those in the area blaming women for rejecting him. This led to outrage all across the world along with a Twitter trend of #YesAllWomen.
The Bendigo creative community is now joining together to decry violence against women and raise money for services that support women closer to home.
View Point Gallery will sponsor the SAFE2014 exhibit, which is a pop-up charity exhibition featuring a variety of artists from the community. From June 27 to June 29, 50 percent from all exhibition sales will be donated to the Annie North Women’s Refuge. View Point Gallery has elected to waive all hire fees and the remaining sale proceeds will be divided 40 percent to the artist and 10 percent to gallery costs.
The Annie North Women’s Refuge is a high-security women’s refuge in Bendigo that offers women and children a place to escape domestic violence. The #YesAllWomen trend on social media has spread light and insight to everyday struggles of women. Brave women across the world have shared their stories of sexism, violence, fear, and prejudice. The trend has educated others on how these everyday occurrences happen to all women, no matter the age.
There will also be raffles and amazing local art created by those around the community.
