Clare’s Angels came about after 3 year old Clare Diffey was diagnosed with a rare neurological regressive disorder called Rett Syndrome. This syndrome affects approximately 380 girls Australia wide and sees the girls develop normally until about 6 to 12 months when very slight changes begin to take place. By 12 – 18 months most the girls will pass to Stage 2 of the syndrome called rapid regressive. In this stage the girls will typically lose all of the fine and gross motor skills that they had developed. Stage 3 is a progressive stage where the girls can begin to learn again however it is their speech and purposeful hand movement that is most affected and most girls will never be able to speak, feed themselves, toilet themselves etc. A lot of girls will develop epilepsy and scoliosis however we do know that they do understand and can learn by the use of eye gaze as a form of communication. Most girls can stay in Stage 3 for the rest of their lives however others will go on to Stage 4 and regress again. Girls with Rett Syndrome are lovingly referred to as “Silent Angels”, hence the name ‘Clare’s Angels’.
